The term “ash” refers to any tree species that produces an open-grained hardwood with a strong tendency toward splitting and notched corners on its trunk. An ash log will have bark on one, or both sides, depending on whether it fell or was cut down.
The most common species used in woodworking are Black Ash (Fraxinus nigra) and White Ash (Fraxinus americana).
